Ruddy Duck
Oxyura jamaicensis
Excellent divers, the Ruddy Ducks can go down to 1 m deep in one dive!
The male is easily recognizable during the period of mating : he has a beautiful red plumage and a blue beak.
Ruddy duck is considered invasive in Europe. Endemic of North America, it was introduced in England in the 1950s. It threatens the survival of the white-headed duck, a species found in southern Europe. Indeed the 2 species can hybridize. In addition, Ruddy duck males are more aggressive and dominant.
